Project - Smit-Forsythe Ceek Assessment and Restoration Project

  1. Project Outline
1. Project Outline

Smit-Forsythe Creek is located on the east side of the Tsolum River and flows from two wetland areas known as Burns Marsh and Wildwood Marsh through about 30 properties to the Tsolum just downstream of the single lane bridge on Dove Creek Road (Rees Bridge).

Over the last 100 and more years since the arrival of European settlers the land has been altered to accomodate farming and rural development. Many wetlands have been drained, long lengths of the streams have been straightened and or in-filled and ponds and other rearing habitats have been lost.

Smit-Forsythe Creek after all of this still receives an influx of spawning salmon and trout, the eggs are lain, the young fish hatch and become fry and as the stream begins to dry (see FAQ's "Seasonal Streams") the fish are trapped, isolated from the Tsolum and are lost each and every year to easy predation, drying and obstructions.

This project will look at the entire system using StreamKeeper methodology, collect the data we need to have a holistic plan developed and attempt to restore the entire creek system so the fry can survive better.
